Take It Outside!
When the weather is gorgeous and the outdoors are calling, it can be a real mental struggle to get to the gym. If you’re not a runner or cyclist, you might feel like you have to choose between dragging yourself to the hot, sweaty gym to stay fit, or spending some precious time outside enjoying that summer weather.
Or you could do both.
Your local park or playground was probably designed with kids in mind. But those benches, bars, swings, and slides can also make great workout equipment. In fact, many of the exercises you pay to do at the gym can be done in a park with your own body weight. And if you find yourself at the park with your kiddos often, but can’t use that time to get in a full workout, you can always sneak in a few strength-training or flexibility moves while you’re there!
Taking your workout outside doesn’t just liven up your routine; as the New York Times points out, moving your fitness routine outside may help you work out harder, reduce stress, and just plain enjoy yourself more.
If you’re liking the idea of moving your workout to an outdoor setting, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your workouts:
- Warm up and cool down…always, always, always!
- Try going to the park in the morning for cool weather, no crowds, and a great start to your day.
- Need some cardio? Walk, jog, or cycle to your favorite park instead of driving. Or try doing short sprints, jumping jacks, or other cardio between strength and flexibility exercises.
- Bring light hand weights or a resistance band for an extra challenge.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen!
- Be extra aware of your hydration as the days get warmer. Make sure your park has working drinking fountains, or that you’ve got your water bottle in tow.
- Got a workout buddy? Try meeting them at a park instead of the gym so you can both enjoy the fresh air.
- Bringing the littles with you? Squeeze in some of these five exercises while you play!
